I'm quite pleased she wrote a novel, as her short stories are among the only ones I've really enjoyed for more than one collection.nomadreaderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04795144320842413060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5918892767071973314.post-6674868907643132442012-08-31T13:40:14.508-04:002012-08-31T13:40:14.508-04:00I sampled her stories before I read this novel, bu...I sampled her stories before I read this novel, but I think I enjoyed the novel more. (That could have more to do with having read so many Alice Munro short stories lately, which are amazing, but not at all the same style.) The idea of you having "highlighted in earnest" makes me giggle, and I agree that it's the kind of book that could have gone on a good bit longer before I'd've looked up from the page; I became quite attached to these characters and really wanted things to turn out well for each of them.Buried In Printhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00808249065026802365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5918892767071973314.post-45646021175214080282012-07-01T15:21:40.661-04:002012-07-01T15:21:40.661-04:00Audra, I think you'd really like Crane's w...Audra, I think you'd really like Crane's writing!nomadreaderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04795144320842413060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5918892767071973314.post-73874183101287278252012-07-01T15:21:25.455-04:002012-07-01T15:21:25.455-04:00Thanks, Heather! Thanks, Heather!nomadreaderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04795144320842413060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5918892767071973314.post-65288063339336303452012-06-27T11:25:05.218-04:002012-06-27T11:25:05.218-04:00Oooh, I need this one! It wasn't as ubiquitous as it was in Buddha in the Attic (although it didn't bother me there), and it did feel like this unknown narrator was talking to the reader rather than the characters .nomadreaderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04795144320842413060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5918892767071973314.post-30882478450381230592012-06-22T09:28:59.412-04:002012-06-22T09:28:59.412-04:00Thanks, Diane! It's not a style I've had luck with in the past -- it was the main reason I didn't love The Virgin Suicides. I did okay with it in The Buddha in the Attic, though maybe because that book was so short.

Rambling aside, this sounds like a great story, no matter the narration.
