The Backlist Book Club: Affinity discussion

Image
It's the last day of the month, which means it's time to discuss The Backlist Book Club July read. I did manage to finish Affinity  in time, but I'm still processing and articulating my thoughts about it. I'll post a review next week, but in the mean time, there is much to discuss! If you haven't read Affinity yet, be warned: spoilers abound! Feel free to join in conversations and strings that interest you--and please pose more questions in the comments too. If you'd like to follow the discussion today (and perhaps for a few days), please consider subscribing to future comments so you don't miss any. Tune in tomorrow to see what you voted on for our August pick! 1. Which character was your favorite? 2. What surprised you most in this novel? 3. What disappointed you in this novel? 4. To whom would you recommend this novel? 5. Let's talk about the twist . Did you see it coming? Did you like it? Did it change your thoughts on the book? ...

The July 2013 Backlist Book Club selection is Affinity  by Sarah Waters. Affinity  held the lead for the first two weeks of voting, but  Fingersmith  had a surge of votes this weekend. In the end, it was not enough to win.  Affinity  never lost it's lead. Here's the full voting breakdown: Affinity : 43% Fingersmith :   36% The Night Watch : 21% Tipping the Velvet : 0% (I hope the lack of love for TtV  means you've all already read it!) Here's how it works: You have all month to read the book. I'll be reading it in the next two weeks and will review it around the middle of the month--that also serves as your reminder to read it before the end of the month. On Wednesday, July 31, I'll host a discussion of the book here. The Twitter hashtag is #BacklistClub . Participate as much or as little as you like. If you'd like to post about The Backlist Book Club, grab the button and go! Are you in? Get the book!  Buy Affinity f...

It's Back: The Backlist Book Club returns in July!

Image
After taking six months off, The Backlist Book Club is coming back, but I'm changing things up a bit. What's not  new The basics are the same: on the first of each month, I'll announce the book for that month. Around the middle of the month, I'll post my review of the book. On the last day of the month, I'll host a discussion of the book. I'd love company, of course, but The Backlist Book Club is commitment free: read with me only the months you choose to. Easy, right? What is  new Themes and voting. Each month will have a theme. Some months will have the same theme each year (i.e. mysteries in October and African-American authors in February), while other months will change. I'll announce the theme for the month on the 15th of the month prior. I'll also provide a few choices that fit theme and let you, the readers, vote. A vote isn't an obligation that you'll join in (although I'd love it if you did!) The theme for July 2013 is Sa...
