A Love Letter to Daisy Jones & the Six

Image
Dear Taylor Jenkins Reid, I'm so glad Daisy's publication day is here and the world will get to enjoy it. I was lucky enough to get a galley of it last June and instead of saving it , I read it compulsively in a single day. I had high expectations, as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo  was my favorite read of 2017 . I've been recommending it to a lot of people the past two years. And since June, I've been saying, "you read Evelyn Hugo , right? Her new book is even better. Pre-order it." I did too. I pre-ordered the audiobook because the cast is incredible: Jennifer Beals, Benjamin Bratt, Judy Greer, Pablo Schreiber, and more. I also chose it as my Book of the Month because I want a hardcover copy. I'm in good company, as Reese Witherspoon   picked it for the Hello Sunshine book clu b this month. Plus she's making my dreams come true and making it a tv show . Daisy Jones & the Six  is a book I want to read and listen to over and over and over. ...

A letter to Taylor Jenkins Reid

Dear Taylor, A year ago, I didn't know who you were. A couple of your book covers were vaguely familiar, but I hadn't read any of them. In July 2017, I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo , and I fell in love, with Evelyn and with your writing. It's a book I've recommended to many, many people over the last year, and they all report back how much they love it too. It was my favorite book of 2017 . It's a book that made me want to read our backlist in order. I devoured Forever, Interrupted  and After I Do  in fall 2017 (they both made my top 10 fiction reads of 2017 ), and then I made myself slow down because I didn't want to live in a world where I didn't have more of your books to read. Instead I enjoyed following you on Instagram and Twitter . I read books you recommended and was recently thrilled to discover how much we both love The Bold Type . When I saw you were speaking at the American Library Association conference, I was ecstatic. Your speec...

My Favorite Reads of 2017: Fiction

Image
I aim to read a lot of fiction by authors whose previous work I've enjoyed, by authors who are new-to-me, and by authors who are new. When I looked at this list, my ten favorite fiction reads in 2017, I'm happy to see that it reflects that aim. [Covers take you to Amazon] 10. Forever, Interrupted  and After I Do  by Taylor Jenkins Reid 2017 is the year I discovered Taylor Jenkins Reid. After reading her latest novel, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo  (see below), I wanted to go back and read her backlist in order. Forever, Interrupted  is her first novel. I picked it up only knowing she had written it, and I so appreciated that particular reading experience, I'm hesitant to say more (so if you're spoiler-averse to events that occur within the first ten pages, skip ahead.) Nine days into the marriage of Elsie and Ben, Ben is hit by a truck while riding his bike and dies. This premise sounds overly dramatic, but it's not. The rest of the novel unfolds over two ...
